Roles and Role Check
A role is a short document describing a job: what it involves, and what doing it well looks like. You write it once and assign it to everyone who holds that job, so a manager with four engineers writes one role and assigns it four times.
Role Check reads your last 90 days of 1:1s with one person and reports the difference between the job you wrote down and what you actually talked about.
Your reports never see the role you wrote, and never see a Role Check. Both are private to you, like your notes. About privacy
The Roles library
Section titled “The Roles library”Select Roles in the navigation. This is your library, with one row per job rather than per person. Each row shows how many responsibilities the role lists and how many people hold it. A role nobody holds reads Unassigned.
Write a role
Section titled “Write a role”Select New role. Mora offers a starter template before a blank page. The templates cover ten common jobs:
| Area | Templates |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Engineer, Engineer (senior), Engineering Manager |
| Design | Product Designer, Product Designer (senior) |
| Product | Product Manager, Product Manager (senior) |
| Sales and marketing | Account Executive, Marketing Manager |
| Operations | Support Specialist, Operations Manager |
You can preview a template before using it, or start from scratch.
A role has these fields:
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Title and level | For example, Engineer, Senior |
| Overview | A sentence or two on what the job is for |
| Responsibilities | The parts of the job, listed as separate items |
| What good looks like | For each responsibility, the standard at this level. Optional |
List responsibilities as separate items rather than as one paragraph. Role Check looks for each responsibility individually, so it needs them separated.
A role describes expectations, not a job posting. There’s no qualifications section, because that’s for deciding whether to hire someone.
Assign a role
Section titled “Assign a role”Two ways, with the same result:
- From the person — on their page, use the Profile card’s Role row and select Assign, or Change if they already have one
- From the role — open it from the library and assign it to people there
Once assigned, the role appears wherever that person’s job is named, and Mora reads it when suggesting agenda items and writing briefings.
Run a Role Check
Section titled “Run a Role Check”Open the person’s page, select the Role Check tab, then Run Role Check. It runs in the background, and you’ll get a notification when it’s ready.
What it reads
Section titled “What it reads”Every 1:1 with that person completed in the last 90 days: your notes, your agenda items, and the answers you recorded.
It needs at least two 1:1s with something written in them. Below that, it says the record is too thin rather than reporting on it.
What it reports
Section titled “What it reports”It opens with two numbers: how much of your record relates to the role’s responsibilities compared with work the role doesn’t mention, and how many responsibilities nothing in the record touched. Neither number is scored, because there’s no standard for what either should be.
Then each responsibility is listed, with anything absent first:
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Absent | Nothing in 90 days of 1:1s touched this |
| Unclear | There’s something, but not enough to be sure |
| Covered | Your record touches it, with the relevant 1:1s listed |
Below that, Mora lists recurring themes in your 1:1s that the role doesn’t mention.
A chart shows the 1:1s in the period as columns, including any that touched nothing.
How to read it
Section titled “How to read it”Role Check answers two different questions:
- Am I giving this person work that isn’t their job? Look at how much of your record sits outside the role, and at the themes the role doesn’t mention.
- Are they not doing part of the job? Look at what’s marked absent.
There’s a third possibility Role Check can’t tell you about: the role may be wrong. An absence often means the responsibility no longer applies, or belongs to someone else now. Edit the role and run the check again.
Run it again
Section titled “Run it again”Select Run again, above the results. The report you’re reading stays on screen while the new one is produced.
Role Check only runs when you ask for it.
If there’s nothing to show
Section titled “If there’s nothing to show”| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No role assigned | Nobody has written or assigned a role for this person | Assign one from that screen |
| Nothing checked yet | A role is assigned but no check has run | Select Run Role Check |
| A short, uncertain result | Fewer than two 1:1s with notes in the last 90 days | Run a couple more and wrap them up |
